Description of The West Coast of Sardinia | Guided Bike Tour

A cycling tour along Sardinia’s west coast is a great way to see the island from many angles. With the support of local guides, the route runs from Alghero, shaped by Catalan influence, to the south coast.

The ride follows coastal roads with sea views toward Bosa and Pula, then moves inland through cork oak forests, Mediterranean scrub, and the wild landscapes of Costa Verde, dotted with old mining villages.

This is more than just cycling. The tour is built to share Sardinia’s culture, local food, wines, and history, offering a deeper look at the island beyond the bike.

Bike tour itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Alghero | Warm Up Ride

A town shaped by Catalan roots

Alghero has a compact historic center, with narrow streets enclosed by large stone walls that overlook the sea. It’s a pleasant place to begin the week. Arrival is at the airport, followed by a short 10-minute transfer to the hotel in town.

Depending on your arrival time, you will receive a careful bike fitting and a short warm-up ride through quiet countryside, passing olive groves, orchards, and vineyards.

The day continues with a Mediterranean aperitif, featuring the local Torbato wine, and ends with dinner at one of our selected restaurants set along the old city walls above the marina.

Overnight: Alghero
Included: Dinner

Day 2: From Alghero to Bosa | Cycling 45Km - +889 m / 28mi - +2916ft

Wild coastline and Malvasia hills

The route follows the scenic coastal road from Alghero to Bosa. Around 45 km run high above the sea, with open views over Alghero Bay and Capo Caccia.

It’s one of the most striking rides of the tour. The road winds through a raw landscape of cliffs, open pastures, and oak forests, then descends into Bosa, a colorful medieval town overlooking Malaspina Castle from the hill above.

After checking in at your centrally located hotel, there’s time for a walk through the old town. Cobblestone streets and small shops fill a historic center that is among the best preserved in Italy.

Overnight: Bosa
Included: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 3: From Bosa to Cabras | Cycling 62Km - +728m / 39mi - +2388ft

Olive oil and bottarga

The route crosses one of Sardinia’s key olive oil areas, centered on Cuglieri, where the Cathedral of Santa Maria della Neve overlooks the valley.

Leaving Bosa, the road climbs through the Modolo valley, a patchwork of vegetable gardens, olive trees, and Malvasia vineyards, where the area’s well-known wine is produced. From the top, it’s worth turning back to look at Porto Alabe, with its dark volcanic sand, before continuing through the villages of Magomadas and Tresnuraghes.

In Cuglieri, there’s time for an olive oil tasting and a closer look at local production, which began in the 16th century under Jesuit influence. Soon after, a long descent opens expansive views toward Capo San Marco and Mal di Ventre Island.

After passing a few more villages, the route enters the Sinis Peninsula, known for wetlands, lagoons, and pink flamingos. The ride finishes in Cabras, a place with deep fishing roots dating back to Phoenician times. Local tradition links this area to the origins of bottarga, made from cured mullet roe. In town, the museum displays the Giants of Mont’e Prama, 9th-century BC statues representing Nuragic warriors.

Overnight: Cabras
Included: Breakfast

Day 4: From Cabras to Buggerru | Cycling 100Km - +1500m / 62mi - +4921ft

Wild Costa Verde

The route passes by the Marceddì lagoon, a quiet place that feels unchanged over time. From here, the landscape opens into the Costa Verde, known for its old mining villages and wide sandy dunes, often used as natural film settings. This is one of the most remote and untamed parts of the island.

Low Mediterranean scrub covers the hills like a continuous blanket, reaching all the way to the large dune systems near the sea. The coastline feels raw and exposed, shaped by the constant Mistral wind. A stop in Portixeddu offers a short break before the final stretch to Buggerru, a former mining town set inside a small coastal inlet.

The day ends with dinner in a local trattoria in Buggerru, simple and traditional.

Overnight: Buggerru
Included: Breakfast

Day 5: From Buggerru to Sant'Antioco | Cycling 70Km - +770m / 43mi - +2526ft

Old rural villages and Carignano vineyards

The day opens with a long climb, followed by two rewarding descents with expansive sea views, leading down to the beach of Funtanamare. The route then reaches Portoscuso, a good spot for a short stop and an ice cream.

From here, a flat 25 km stretch leads to Sant’Antioco, connected to the mainland by a bridge since Roman times. The historic center of this fishing town, still rich in local traditions, is where the evening ends with dinner.

OverniSant’Antiocotioco
Included: Breakfast

Day 6: The loop of 2 islands | Cycling 60Km - +600m / 37mi - +1968ft

Exploring the multicultural roots of Carloforte

This loop focuses on the two islands in southern Sardinia. They sit close to each other but differ a lot in history and landscape. The route heads to Calasetta, where a short ferry ride of about 30 minutes reaches San Pietro Island, landing in Carloforte.

Carloforte is a small Mediterranean town shaped by Ligurian, North African, and Sardinian influences. The ride explores salt pans, small beaches, and dramatic cliffs, all the way to the lighthouse of Capo Sandalo. After cycling, there’s time to walk around town, known for its long red tuna tradition, still practiced using the ancient tonnara fishing system.

In the afternoon, the ferry returns to Calasetta. Stronger riders can continue with an optional loop of about 40 km around Sant’Antioco, riding along the coast past hidden coves, old Spanish watchtowers, and cultivated fields.

Overnight: Sant’Antioco
Included: Breakfast

Day 7: From Sant'Antioco to Pula | Cycling 85Km - +990m / 85mi - +3248ft

Riding along the Costa del Sud

This stretch shows some of the most striking scenery in southern Sardinia. After a few kilometers, the route passes the Romanesque-Pisan Cathedral of Tratalias, a quiet, well-preserved site.

From here, the road follows the coast, moving up and down past hidden coves and old Spanish watchtowers. The sea changes color frequently, from deep blue to light green. The ride reaches Chia, home to one of the island’s most beautiful beaches. After that, about 15 km of calm countryside leads to Nora, a significant Phoenician settlement later taken over by the Romans.

The day ends in Pula, a lively town and a good place to celebrate before the transfer to Cagliari for the final dinner in the city center.

Overnight: Cagliari
Included: Breakfast

Day 8: Arrivederci!
